Nautical Guestroom

I hate to admit it,but, I am not creative, and I'm no decorator. Many of the blogs I read often discuss decorating and interior design. Many of you show your own homes, and I'm always impressed with your skills. I've decided to try my hand at a little interior design in our home. We've decided to purchase new furniture for our guestroom. This is the last room in the house that needs to be "done". We've purchased new living room furniture, including bookcases and a great tv stand, bedroom furniture, and as of this weekend, the office is done. Our basement was re-finished last Winter, and my old sectional is down there. It looks great!

We have bought some furniture from IKEA over the years, including our current bedroom furniture. I like it a lot, but it's super modern. I'm not sure I'm going to always want such a modern look. We were at IKEA yesterday purchasing some final items for our office and we checked out the bedroom furniture. I found two sets for our guestroom, which I'd like to do in a nautical theme. I like the furniture because it's very classic, and I can imagine this being in our guestroom in this house and for years to come even in another house.

This bed and dresser are from the Hemnes Collection.

This set is from the Birkeland collection.
I'm not yet sure about an end table. I plan to check out Home Goods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx. I also envision a cool wicker chest to store extra bedding.

Do you all agree that this furniture is pretty classic? I feel like I can build a nautical room around this furniture, but can also do something else with it in our next home. It will be used so infrequently, I doubt it'll ever be "worn out", as we so rarely have overnight guests...though I sometimes move into the guestroom when B snores too loudly! ;)

I searched a bit in google images and found some "inspiration":

A more tropical look:
And nautical: I love the simplicity of the last photo with the single initial and matching lamps. I also like the pretty pattern on the first two comforters.

This will a nice Spring project for me, and something to look forward to. If you follow me on twitter, you might already know that on February 4th, I'm having hip surgery. I have a labral tear, which I'm certain happened in ballet. The surgery is arthroscopic, so not too invasive, but I'll still be on bed rest for 2+ weeks, and using crutches for 3 weeks. Thankfully, I'll have my ipad and all you ladies to keep me company!

I didn't know you were having surgery!!! I always forget to check out twitter. Best of luck for a speedy recovery.

I think your design project will be a great thing to work on while you recover. I love the two sets you picked out. I think my favorite of the two is the Hemnes collection. I like the style and the fact that I wouldn't be able to wack my toes on the side of the bed, I'm known to do that ;)

You should also check out Crate & Barrel's basics. Have fun decorating, post photos when you have the guest room finished!

I found your blog via QBS, love it! But I wanted to tell you I have the white Hemnes bed, and I LOVE IT. It's simple, comfy, solid. Highly recommend it, good luck!

Decorating is my passion, I'm fairly good at it, but now I need other people's homes to decorate as I have pretty much completed mine. Dang! Lol

I really like the dresser from the first collection (only with different knobs - I'm a silver girl) but love the bed from the second collection. Either set would be good and usuable for many years, but those are just my preferences. Goodluck with your surgery and here's to a speedy recovery!

I love the first nautical collection photo! I feel like it would be a very relaxing room to be in.

Surgery is no good. :( I hope all goes well for you!

I have the Hemnes collection bed set myself. I love it though the dresser drawers tend to fall apart if there is too much in them. sigh I just have too much clothing :-)
