Restaurant Restroom Manners

On Friday, my girlfriends and I went to dinner at Chen Chow. Before our food arrived, I accompanied my friend, E, to the restroom. Before we headed back to the table, I reapplied my lipstick (a new shade I picked up from MAC). Another girl was in the restroom and upon seeing me reapply my lipstick, she turns to me and says, "Is that MAC? Can I use some?" Needless to say, I was thrown off (I had also had exactly 1.5 dirty martinis and was a little "slow". I didn't know how to respond!) so I just handed over the lipstick. She just whipped it open and applied it directly to her lips!

When we returned to the table E told everyone what had happened and everyone was appalled! I have since thrown out the tube of lipstick, much to my dismay. What is the proper etiquette in this situation? I don't want to be rude, but I think it was rude of her to ask and then not even attempt to at least use her finger or a lipstick brush! Or how about, don't ask strangers to use their makeup? What do you all think? Has this ever happened to you?

You're too nice. :) I wouldn't have shared. Very akward.

I still can't believe she asked. The nerve of some people.

Dirty martini sounds great. Love them with blue cheese stuffed olives. YUM.

Oh geez! I hate it when that happens. I would play the gerb-a-phob card and tell her that you just are not into sharing personal products. You were a total sweetheart to hand it over! Safe to say, you deserve a new tube!! Xoxo-BLC

oh ewww! I wouldn't have shared either, though I will admit that I'd be too shocked to say much at first. I can't believe someone asked...that's just awful!

Well that is just crazy of her to ask!! Crazy!! But I guess you can always make up something about being sick or germ sensitive. So strange!!

Ohh,my! WeIl would have said NO! Eww, Oh As if!! Throw in a Whatever! "W" included (A total Cluess rebuff) Perhaps a laugh could have been shared, as you placed your lipstick into your purse, as you smile a walk away.

At least that way she would have learned her lesson, and you got a chance to prance down memory lane. Friends,MAC, and Buzz in tow!

OMG!!! That is unreal, I can't believe she would ask to share lipstick! I don't even share lipstick or eye makeup (eyeliner or mascara, eye shadow is ok) with my friends or even my sister! I work in public health so I know too much.

It was SO rude of her to ask and I would have just said "sorry, I don't share makeup." It's hard to think of something when you are put on the spot by someone asking something like that.

I'm really appalled that she would even ask. Unreal!!!

soooo rude! I can't believe someone would have the nerve to ask that! You're totally right though what do you say- HECK NO! And then she gets all mad....so rude

Yes she was rude but this behavior is not surprising in today’s manner deficient society. You were caught off guard. Had you not been a simple “NO E, I’d rather not share my lipstick” would suffice.

This is such an etiquette faux pas! Goodness gracious that was awful. You simply have to throw it away...I hate when someone does this or reaches over and takes a sip of my drink...yuck!
