Back to the Basics

When I turned 10, my mom "taught" me how to take care of my skin. She has always used Pond's Cold Cream, followed by Pond's Moisturizing Cream. She bought me my own jars, and also a set to keep at my dad's house, and with that, I began to partake in the skincare ritual of both my mother and grandmother. A few years later, Clean & Clear became all the rage. I left the days of Pond's behind me, and ventured into "teenager-dom" - clean, clear, and under control. From there, I've used many different types of skin care products, most recently Cetaphil, which is great....in the Summer*.

In Winter, or at least when you live in hell the tundra, like me, your skin might get dry. I exercise 5-6 days a week, so I'm always trying to keep my face clean, and wash it often. This Winter, my skin has gotten really really dry. I had to switch from MAC Studiofix, to some other MAC foundation (name is escaping me, because I've used nothing but Studiofix for 10 years) that is more moisturizing. I've tried using extra moisturizer at night and in the morning. Nothing has helped.

I was at Target this weekend, and it hit me....Pond's! My mother has beautiful skin, and she looks much younger than her 35 years, wink wink. So I bought the two Pond's products I never should have abandoned all those years ago:

My skin is already looking and feeling better! Not to mention, cold cream really removes makeup. There is no residue makeup left, and my skin is so soft and so moisturized! My mother has had it right all along! I should never have been swayed by Clean & Clear and their witty advertising, or Biore and those little pore strips! Oh no, Pond's is where it's at, ladies, and it's been working forever! Cold Cream was created in the 2nd Century! As Martha would say, "It's a good thing", and the two jars were under $10. Best $10 I've spent in a long time!

*My dermatologist and I both swear by Cetaphil! I love it, and when it's not so cold and dry outside and in my house, despite my humidifier, I'll certainly start using it again. However, the Pond's will remain in my cabinet for nighttime use, and if my skin starts to act up again.

*EDITED TO ADD*
Pond's did not sponsor this post. This is just my opinion on what I think is a great product. Pond's, if you'd like to sponsor this post with a giveaway, email me! ;)

Also, a reader asked how to use these creams, or at least how I use them. I start with the cold cream, rub in on my face and neck with my fingers, and leave it on a minute or two. Then is wipe it off with a tissue. You can also rinse it off with a warm wash cloth. I then lather on the moisturizing cream. During the day I use less and also use my Oil of Olay cream with SPF 15. At night I lather it on.

I've been using Cetaphil for about a year now since I have eczema-type dry skin. I've tried to mix in some acne based face washes since I've been "blessed" with adult acne. With the winter now, my skin is SOOOO dry!! I bought Pond's AGES ago when it was "the thing" of the moment. I've started using it again lately. I feel like my jar is blue but it doesn't look like the Dry Skin Cream. I'll have to check. But do you use both creams? How/when?

I'm a cetaphil fan myself! When the winter comes, you should always switch to a cleanser that is milky. Stay away from any clear cleansers.

I use dove moisturizing products! I love 'em!

Great tip! I love products that remind me of the stuff my mom used. She LOVED Noxema and I still love the smell of it :)

I'm glad you found something that's helping your skin survive the dry winter months. :) I feel your pain. Not only is my face dry, but my hands look like I'm ninety years old. LOL...

Does your VIX suit have a full coverage bottom? There are 4 styles to chose from in the bottom and I definitely think I'll order the full. I love the Allison, too. Today, I found it in an aqua color. So pretty. I think I'll get that one. 20% off for signing up with their website. Cool, eh?

This is really funny! Though I live in NY and have for 25 years, I am a southern girl (born in LA) and the older I get the more I identify with my southern roots....but my grandmother AND her mother were both huge Ponds devotees and you know what their skin GLOWS! You are right...maybe they ARE onto something.....so funny that if you keep something long enough it comes back!
Great blog....really entertaining, also would love to know how you liked Black Swan...I had mixed feelings it was good but disturbing and dark, Natalie P. was incredible in it however.
I am new to blogworld and loving it! Please if you are able, check out my new blog

Amazing the things our mothers and grandmothers were right about if we would have only listened. My grandmother (Nanny) always always used ponds. In fact, when i think back to my childhood I can just see her face covered with cold cream. So glad you did this post because I really need to get back to my roots so to speak. Gonna pick some up today! I am a new follower and love your blog. Witty and fun! Hope you are having a great day! Come visit anytime for some southern cooking! XO

LOL You are fine not to tell us that Pond's DIDN'T sponsor you...you're only in hot water if you neglect to tell us when somebody DOES sponsor your post. ;)

I am glad you found an answer to your dry skin woes! I have the same dry skin issues in the winter, & I'm NOT in the tundra - I'm in the South! I swear by Bobbi Brown hydrating face cream for day, & I have been looking for something equally perfect for nighttime...maybe I'll pick up some Pond's cold cream. =)
